The main protagonist of this episodic medical drama is a Buddhist priest who is also a medical doctor. The struggles he faces in each episode ask the questions: What does it mean to live? How do we face death? The story is based on the currently serialized comic of the same name. In addition to the passionate Buddhist priest-cum-doctor working to save patients’ lives and souls played by Hideaki Ito, Miki Nakatani, Tsuyoshi Muro, and Honoka Matsumoto also make appearances as doctors each with their own quirky personalities.
Six patients are brought to Aobadai Hospital’s Emergency Center after a car accident. Emergency physician Teruyuki Matsumoto (Hideaki Ito) rushes in, still wearing his priest’s robes, and quickly treats the patients with fellow physician Ryoko Miyake (Miki Nakatani). However, the next day, one of the female patients’ condition suddenly deteriorates, and she is pronounced brain dead. Dr. Matsumoto asks the woman’s 13-year-old son to make a decision about his mother’s treatment, for which Dr. Miyake accuses him of being cruel. Meanwhile, elite cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Tatsuya Hamada (Murotsuyoshi) joins the medical team at Aobadai, on loan from a major university hospital.
